1 How the severity measures are displayed in this book

The purpose of this book is to provide the clinician or researcher with a user-friendly display of the most common spine severity measures and a few common general severity measures, all in one quick-reference location. We chose to provide a short introduction to each major spine area or domain followed by a summary of each severity measure pertinent to that area or domain.

The spine severity measures are divided broadly into two main categories: disease severity and trauma severity (Fig 4–1). Each category is further divided into the following subcategories and presented accordingly in the book.
