Mental state examination


In psychiatry we are largely dependent upon the patient’s subjective account of symptoms in order to reach a diagnosis, with few opportunities to do objective diagnostic tests. This can be a difficult task for the patient, struggling to put complex feelings and experiences into words, and for the interviewer, looking for diagnostic signs among all the information given. The mental state examination helps to overcome these difficulties by providing a structure for a detailed, systematic description of the patient’s symptoms and behaviour.


The mental state examination is divided into seven sections (Fig. 1) which are described below.
