Contraindications to such therapy are past suicide attempts, substance dependence, chronic alcohol abuse, incapacitating obsessional or phobic symptoms, and destructive behavior.

Brief focal psychodynamic psychotherapy was developed at the Tavistock Clinic in London by Daniel Malan.
