Smoking Cessation Pharmacotherapy
General Considerations

Common side effects for nicotine therapy may include headache, insomnia, nightmares, nausea, dizziness, and blurred vision.

Nicotine use may be contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation, in patients with coronary artery disease (particularly 2 weeks post myocardial infarction, worsening angina), peripheral vascular disease, serious arrhythmias, allergy to nicotine. Weigh risks and benefits prior to administration.

Refer to package insert for further treatment recommendations depending on formulation available, as well as other potential precautions and adverse effects.
Pharmacotherapy

Bupropion SR (Zyban): Antidepressant with dopaminergic and adrenergic properties.

Dose 150 mg p.o. qd for 3 d and then increase to 150 mg p.o. BID for 7-12 weeks.

Set quit date for 1-2 weeks after beginning treatment.

Side effects may include dry mouth, insomnia, agitation, and seizures, in approximately 0.1% to 0.4% of patients.

Contraindicated in eating disorders, history of seizures.

Longer duration recommended to improve long-term cessation rates.
