Tests for Diabetes Mellitus and Prediabetes
According to American Diabetic Association (ADA) position statement, 1994, the diagnosis of diabetes is made if

A patient has the symptoms of diabetes (polyuria, polydipsia, and unexplained weight loss) and has a casual plasma glucose level (i.e., a random plasma glucose level, irrespective of time of the last meal) of ≥200 mg per dL.OR

Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (i.e., the patient has had no caloric intake for at least 8 hours) of ≥126 mg per dL.OR

Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) which shows a plasma glucose level of ≥200 mg per dL, at 2 hours after an oral load of 75 g of anhydrous glucose dissolved in water.
