Tests for Monitoring Anticoagulant Therapy
NOTE:
Thromboplastin converts prothrombin (factor II) to thrombin. The strength of the thromboplastin used in the PT determination varies with the manufacturer, which can then give different prothrombin time results. This difference is therefore standardized by use of the international normalized ratio (INR).
PT-INR for patients on stable oral anticoagulant therapy is 2.0 to 3.0 for patients being treated for deep vein thrombosis, and is 3.0 to 4.0 for patients with mechanical heart valves.
Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) 60 to 70 seconds.
Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) 25 to 35 seconds.
