  • CNS fungal infection: meningitis, meningoencephalitis, abscess, granuloma, arterial thrombosis. Subacute meningitis, meningoencephalitis most common. Lungs, skin, hair usually primary sites.


  • Pathogenic fungal infections (occur in normal host): histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, coccidiomycosis, paracoccidiomycosis.


  • Opportunistic infections (immunocompromised host): aspergillosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis, mucormycosis, nocardiosis.


Cryptococcosis

Most common mycotic infection directly involving CNS. Major cause of morbidity and mortality among immunosuppressed patients. May simulate tuberculous meningitis, brain tumor, encephalitis, psychosis.
