Ischemic Stroke

Role of genetics incompletely understood in pathogenesis of ischemic stroke; confounded by possible environmental factors.

Documented risk factors of ischemic stroke with strong genetic influence: hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, heart disease, obesity.

Single gene disorders rare; account for small proportion of all strokes. See below and Table 41.1.
