Neurologic Rehabilitation
Approaches: (a) bypass neurologic impediment by teaching adaptive techniques using preserved neurologic function (e.g., practice using normal hand for person with paretic arm); (b) facilitate return of neurologic function (e.g., tasks to improve strength of paretic arm). Functional outcome improved by treatment in comprehensive rehabilitation program.
Occupational Therapy
Goal: promote maximum independence in activities of daily living by improving arm function, cognitive skills. Examples: prevent permanent disability from complications of temporary neurologic impairment (splinting to prevent wrist-flexor contractures from radial nerve palsy); teach new techniques for self-care; prescribe adaptive equipment to compensate for impairment.
Physical Therapy
Goal: maximize function and mobility. Examples: strengthening exercises, gait and balance training, spasticity reduction through stretching or medication, surgical release of shortened tendons, bracing, assistive devices (cane, walker), use of wheelchair.Stay updated, free articles.
